EWGYSA Referee Program

Recreational Referee Program

The EWGYSA Recreational Referee Program allows kids that love the game of soccer to join a new team. Referees manage and officiate the game in accordance with the 17 Laws of the Game. It is a great opportunity to make some money doing something you love and learn important life skills, such as communication, time management, and decision making.

Requirements

Becoming a Recreational Referee has three (3) main requirements:

  1. Age 11+
  2. Pass an online test administered by EWGYSA
  3. Be familiar with the Laws of the Game

Education

EWGYSA conducts in-person clinics and provides digital training materials to give our young referees confidence and an understanding of the rules applicable to the recreational game.

Uniform and Equipment

Referees in the Recreational Program wear a yellow referee shirt (provided) and black shorts. A referee will also need a good whistle and a watch (wrist watch preferred). Cleats are optional, but a referee's job includes running to stay with the action of the game and cleats ensure good traction on the field.

How to Register

Contact the Referee Coordinator for more information.

Become a USSF Certified Referee

To officiate Competitive games, you must become a USSF Certified Grassroots Referee. As of July 1, 2019, US Soccer has instituted a ruling that all certified referees must be at least 13 years of age. Grassroots Referees are taught an understanding of the Laws of the Game adequate for officiating competitive matches.

Becoming a Certified Grassroots Referee requires some online instruction, administered by US Soccer, and an in-person session where you learn signals, positioning, and other referee-related skills.
