BECOME A COACH

5 REASONS TO VOLUNTEER TO COACH FOR EWG

  1. You get to spend that much more time with your kids: We all have busy schedules, so the time with our kids is limited. When you volunteer with your kids’ teams you basically schedule in more time with them. It might not be one-on-one time, but it will be memorable time for you both.
  2. Your help is needed: Having a group of kids together doing anything can be as challenging as it is rewarding. But someone needs to volunteer to be the head coach and they can always use help. Ask friends and family to volunteer with you!
  3. You have a chance to impact kids: Years from now the kids you coach today will still view you as their coach. They will remember the time you had together enjoying sports. By volunteering, you could be the coach, father-figure or mentor a kid needs to set him on the right course in life.
  4. You will grow great relationships: You will meet some pretty good people through volunteering to coach and grown some relationships deeper. Coaching has benefits for the kids as well as the coaches.  ·
  5. Your kids will appreciate it: Much like some of us do today, our parents coached our teams. At the time it was all fun and games. But reflecting on it today and going through it from the parent/coach perspective makes us appreciate the sacrifice they made all those years and the time we spent.

REGISTER

Anyone who would like to volunteer as a coach needs to register online each season. There is no cost to register.

You must also submit to a background check, by checking off the box, during your registration.

Make sure to leave a comment when registering, indicating you would like to coach your child. We usually assume this but sometimes with siblings, we are unsure which child/age group you would like to coach.

To register either log in to your account if you have registered previously, or enter your information under New Users for an Individual User - New Account. When prompted, please be sure to enter Exeter-West Greenwich Youth Soccer Association so that your information will be accessible to the EWGYSA registrar. Once you have registered you will need to also complete a background check online (see below).

BACKGROUND CHECK

Once you have registered for the current season :

Go to www.GotSoccer.com

  • Click on User Login in the upper right hand corner.
  • Click on the Login under Teams and Team Officials.
  • Enter your Username and Password under Individual Coach.
  • This will take you to your coaching home page.
  • Click on Club Registration to indicate your desire to coach recreational soccer, following the prompts accordingly.
  • Click on Background Check to verify the status of your Background Check.
  • If you have never coached, you will need to click Submit New Report.
  • If you have coached previously, under Background Check Report History, click on Print Card.  This will bring up a pdf version of the background check expiration date.  Background checks are valid for 2 years.  If yours has expired, go back to the section where it says Submit New Report.  If it will expire during the season, click Submit New Report on prior page.
  • If your background check is approved through the season, no further action is required.

ALL BACKGROUND CHECKS MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE THE START OF THE SEASON OR YOU WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO COACH.

CONCUSSION AWARENESS

CONCUSSION AWARENESS

CONCUSSION AWARENESS

Implemented in 2016, U.S. Soccer unveiled the U.S. Soccer Concussion Initiative.

Included in the Initiative are specific changes to rules on substitutions and heading for certain age groups. Those changes included:

  • Modify substitution rules to allow players who may have suffered a concussion during games to be evaluated without penalty
  • Eliminating heading for children 10 and under
    • Please note that U11 is listed in the U.S. Soccer Concussion Initiative document because U11 players can be 10 years old at the beginning of the season
  • Limiting the amount of heading in practice for children between the ages of 11 and 13

For more information, please refer to the frequently asked questions, which should help clarify questions regarding the new initiatives.
